Another Hiring Fair Comes to Nanaimo March 29th
Once again, a major industry employer is recruiting on Vancouver Island for workers willing to travel or relocate for employment in Alberta and Northern BC. On March 29th, SOS Staffing are hosting a hiring fair at the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo, seeking entry-level and experienced Equipment Operators for work within the oil and gas industry. NEWS: BC looks to fly welfare recipients north to find jobs
Free airfare, accommodation may be offered
The B.C. government is considering a plan to help people get off welfare by flying them north to cash in on high-paying jobs in areas such as the oil and gas industry.
“There’s a boom happening in the northeast and the northwest of the province,” Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said Wednesday.
“We’ve got several ministries working together to see if we can put together something that would offer free airfare, accommodation — training if necessary — to get [welfare recipients] connected with work,” he said, noting he first announced the plan in last month’s budget… …continue reading
Mining Industry Forum coming to Campbell River
Looking at mining as a career option? Representatives from the Mineral Exploration and Mining Labour Market Task Force – http://www.mining.bc.ca/labour_market_task_force.htm will be at NIEFS (North Island Employment Foundations) in Campbell River on February 16th from 9am to 10am to present an overview of the mining industry and labour market demands in BC and Vancouver Island. There will also be an employer panel from 10:30am to 12:00pm with HR representatives from:
- Yukon Zinc Wolverine Mine – http://www.yukonzinc.com
- Nyrstar, Myra Falls (formerly NVI) – http://www.nyrstar.com
These representatives will be on hand along with North Island College to talk about the types of occupations in demand and skills required. The panel will offer employers and NIC the opportunity to connect with job seekers directly regarding their mining operation and occupations in demand along with associated requirements from which participants can ask questions.

Hiring Fair in Nanaimo – Friday February 10th
Another out of area employer is holding a hiring fair in our region this coming Friday. Baker Hughes, based in Calgary, provides a range of oilfield services and operates in locations all over the world. Currently, the company is recruiting for Equipment Operators and Drivers with Class 1 or 3 Licenses, Electronic Technicians, Supervisors with Coil Tubing experience, Maintenance Journeymen and Apprentice Mechanics.
Check out their hiring fair from 9am onwards at the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo on Friday, February 10th. Job seekers are recommended to bring a resume and submit one by email to recruitcalgary@bakerhughes.com.
Duncan Mall Manager visits Global
Linda Gray with Gulf Pacific Group is Manager of the many mall properties in downtown Duncan. She stopped by our Latest Leads session yesterday to provide valuable insight into retail employment. In recent years, the makeup of our downtown malls has changed with several “big box” stores joining the mom and pop enterprises. Over 45 different retailers are represented including insurance, retail clothing, office supplies, cafes and sports stores. Linda advised that a few new tenants would be joining the Duncan Mall in coming months including Lees Chicken, an automotive retailer and a sporting goods store.

Latest Leads – December 7, 2011
Duncan's unemployment rate has declined for the third straight month according to BC Stats. Now sitting at 7.1%, the rate is still marginally higher than the provincial rate of 7% and significantly highter than that for Vancouver Island (6.4%).
Seasonal hiring has been active in most of the big box stores in Duncan and North Cowichan. Restaurants have also been recruiting as well as employers in other sectors. Around town there are some changes in the works; a furniture store is setting up shop in the old Rogers store location at Duncan Mall (near Superstore) and Lees Chicken are locating a restaurant and drive-through also at Duncan Mall.
