Wage Subsidy ““ Job Seekers’ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wage Subsidy Program and what will it do for me?
Wage Subsidy Program is an incentive to help you find employment and help increase your skills. The Wage Subsidy Program provides a percentage of the wage to the employer to take on a new employee and provide them with on the job skill development. This program is funded by the Federal Government and has been very successful in helping people find long term work.
How long does it last and how much money is involved?
The length of the contract period varies depending on the difference between your existing skills and the skills required to do the job. The subsidy percentage also varies and is negotiated with the employer.
Am I eligible for the program?
The program is open to unemployed and underemployed individuals with an attachment to Employment Insurance. This means you are currently on Employment Insurance, have been on Employment Insurance in the last three years or had a parental claim in the last five years. Underemployed means you are working less than 20 hours per week on average and don’t have regularly scheduled hours. Please note: You cannot quit an existing job in order to secure a Wage Subsidy Position.
Is it hard to get registered?
No, it’s very simple. All we require is a referral on a Return to Work Action Plan, a few forms with basic information, a resume and an eligibility check. Your Action Plan Consultant refers you to us if Wage Subsidy seems like a good option for your return to work plan. To make the registration even easier Global Vocational Services has Job Development Coordinators regularly scheduled throughout the Mid-Island to meet with clients. Just call one of our offices to make an appointment and we’ll let you know where the closest location to you is.
How fast can I start a new job?
Our goal is to process the contract as quickly as possible and usually we can have everything done within a few days of receiving the paperwork from you and the employer. The paperwork for the employer is also minimal and easy to complete. A caution – a contract must be signed between Global Vocational Services and the employer before you start your new position, we can’t write contracts retroactively.
How does it affect my Employment Insurance?
It affects your EI the same way any job does. When you take advantage of the program it is the same as entering into regular employment with an employer.
Does registration with Wage Subsidy limit my access to other EI related programs?
No. You are still able to access other services as long as you maintain your eligibility. If you get a job with a Wage Subsidy you will be employed and will not be eligible for any services that require you to be unemployed.
Do I have to use the program if I register?
No. The program is a tool provided to you to market yourself. It provides you with an advantage when going through the job search process but if you find an employer who would rather hire you without the wage subsidy that’s fine too.
